Brian Clarke
Editor Writing Consultant
About
I'm passionate about helping people improve their writing. I've loved doing that ever since I became a professional editor in 1986.
During my time as a government editor and later as an information officer, I learned a lot about the publishing process. I draw on that inhouse experience almost every day with my freelance editing, proofreading, plain English writing, and writing consultancy work.
I help all sorts of people who write as part of their daily work: research scientists, government workers, corporations, university students, independent authors, startups, and self-publishers.
Since 2017, I have worked as a Writing Consultant in the tutorial program at King's College (University of Queensland) during the academic year. Working individually with students, I show them how to write better assignments: everything about planning, paragraph structure, sentence structure, word choice, grammar, punctuation and anything else they need to know. It's very rewarding work. The Director of Academic and Career Services oversees my schedule.
Over the years, the list of subject areas I've worked on has continued to grow. It includes infrastructure, computer science, biography, agricultural science, health, sugarcane research, history, engineering, environment, humour, education, and journalism.
I am a full member of the Institute of Professional Editors Limited (IPEd), and of Editors Queensland. Back in 2006, I was admitted to the panel of Preferred Editors and Proofreaders for the Queensland Government, which is how I got to work on such a wide range of publications.
I have a BA in Journalism and English, and a Graduate Certificate in Writing, Editing and Publishing from The University of Queensland.
